Holy Angels - Unconditional Love. Unlimited Possibilities.
Getting Involved

Volunteers play an integral role at Holy Angels. Some volunteer opportunities include work with residents, while other duties involve assisting administrative staff or doing landscaping and lawn work, or bringing a pet to visit with residents for Pet Therapy. Holy Angels offers diverse opportunity for involvement.

Volunteers must be at least 18, and interested candidates must go through an application process with the Volunteer Coordinator. Training is provided for volunteers.

VolunTEEN Program

Youth who want the experience of volunteering at Holy Angels participate in the VolunTEEN Program. Young people 13- to 17-years-old can participate in the program during the school year, and there is a summer program, too.

The VolunTEEN program gives young people an opportunity to offer a helping hand to the residents and staff. Teens receive hands-on training and experience in health care and education careers in the field of mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Volunteens read stories to residents, serve as assistants in the administrative offices, decorate classrooms, assist in pushing wheelchairs and assist in resident grooming among other duties.

Fundraising

Holy Angels Foundation, Inc.
The Holy Angels Foundation staff guides the organization’s fundraising activities and work to secure grants and gifts from corporations, individuals, civic clubs, schools, churches, and many other sources. The Foundation also manages a Planned Giving Program to enable persons to leave a portion of their estate or life insurance plans to Holy Angels to help ensure Holy Angels future.

The Foundation plans and carries out two major special events each year: Angel Bowl – a day-long bowl-a-thon where individuals, clubs, schools and businesses form teams to bowl and raise money; Fall Golf Classic – a day on the links to benefit Holy Angels.

The Foundation manages two major direct mail appeals each year. The Christmas Card Campaign is the largest appeal. The card is designed by one of our residents and the back of the card contains a short description of the resident and his/her design. Many people use the card to “honor” or “memorialize” a loved one at Christmas. The Spring Appeal is mailed between Easter and Mother’s Day.

Tours, Speakers and Service Projects

Holy Angels welcomes individuals and groups to tour facilities and meet residents and staff at certain times during the year. Each tour is individually scheduled and hosted by a member of the staff. All tours and group visits are coordinated through the Volunteer Coordinator. Persons or groups wishing to visit for an academic purpose (class, internship or clinician interview) will be referred to specific program staff.

  • Due to the medical conditions of many residents, Holy Angels is generally not able to accommodate tours during the cold and flu season of the year (January, February and March). Additionally, we ask that children under the age of 6 not be included in tours because these ages are most likely to carry the usual childhood illnesses.
  • Tours can be scheduled only on certain days and at specified times, given the special needs of our residents.
  • Generally, the days and times for tours and groups are WEDNESDAYS, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.; 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and SATURDAYS/SUNDAYS between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Holy Angels provides speakers for church, civic and other organizations. Our staff can provide:

  • A first-hand look at the way an organization, which is a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, approaches a world of work where we serve persons with developmental disabilities.
  • An opportunity for your group to learn about the complex and comprehensive programs of service at Holy Angels.
  • Ways to become involved in providing for the needs of persons with developmental disabilities, including mental retardation.

If your group wishes to assist Holy Angels with a hands-on work project (ex: wheelchair/vehicle cleaning; yard work; window cleaning) please realize that these activities are limited to certain seasons of the year, and require coordination and supervision under OSHA guidelines.

Certain activities with our residents may also offer opportunities for group involvement (ex: creative arts; horticulture therapy program and recreational activities). These projects are limited due to the training required to assist many of our residents, and by staffing conditions. When possible, the Volunteer Coordinator will coordinate on-site projects with the Corporate Services Division and Program staff.
