Regardless of physical or mental abilities, or financial status, Holy Angels strives to provide each individual the highest quality of life. Internationally recognized as an innovator, we have worked diligently to create, develop, support and fund specialized and successful programs and services.
Our residential services are designed to provide holistic, high-quality, 24-hour care in a loving, home-like environment. Based on the individual needs of the residents, services and programs may include: medical services, special education, physical therapy, vocation and daily skills training, speech, music, horticulture and creative arts therapy. These facilities include:
Morrow Center, a Specialized Community Residential Center named in honor of Holy Angels’ first resident Maria Morrow, provides round-the-clock care and services for children age birth to 21 years.
McAuley Residences, Intermediate Care Facilities, serving both children and adults, include: Moody Place and Belhaven (15 beds each) and Brookview, Pinehaven and Oakcrest (6 beds each).
Holy Angels has Community Group Homes serving adults with mild to moderate intellectual developmental disabilities who may also have delicate medical conditions. The homes Gary and Carrabaun (located on the Holy Angels property) and Lakewood and South Point (located in the Belmont community) provide needed support and are designed to allow each resident to attain his or her highest level of independence.
Wellness & Medical Services
Holy Angels provides for the complex medical needs of all residents, including 24-hour nursing care and medication administration. Every home and classroom is equipped with specialized medical equipment that allows the residents to receive daily medical care in their own home and environment. Numerous doctors and other healthcare professionals staff onsite clinics in many of the specialty medical areas, such as orthopedics, neurology and pulmonology.
The Dr. C. Ellis Fisher Healthcare Center, named in honor of Holy Angels Medical Director for more than 35 years, is the only onsite specialized healthcare facility of its kind in North Carolina. Located conveniently in the Morrow Center and fully staffed with licensed medical personnel, the Center greatly enhances the response time of needed medical care, as well as reduces the amount of time our residents spend in the hospital.
From preventative medicine to acute care interventions for residents with delicate medical conditions, our nursing staff includes registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and trained technicians who administer to the needs of our residents throughout their lives. This includes: medication administration; resident assessments and screening; development of treatment plans and coordination of care with physicians, therapists and other caregivers; and use of specialized equipment needed by residents throughout our facilities.
Physical Therapy is an integral part of each resident’s activities of daily living and helps to ensure the safety and overall health of our residents. Licensed to practice in the state of North Carolina, all therapists in the department work closely with members of the interdisciplinary team to provide such services as spa therapy, splinting, positioning on adaptive equipment, and one-on-one therapy to promote independence, improve each resident’s quality of life and preventing further physical problems.
Educational, Habilitation & Vocational Services
Due to their complex medical needs and complicated medical treatments, school-age students residing at Holy Angels continue their studies through Special Education classes in the Morrow Center. Working in collaboration with the local school district, as well as clinicians in the areas of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, speech and language pathology, social work and dietary/nutrition, our staff addresses the needs of each student and offers a supportive and collaborative learning environment. Additionally, some residents attend public schools.
Holy Angels offers several Adult Day Programs for residents based on age and interest levels designed to develop life skills, as well as providing a source of recreation and wellness. Developing each student’s ability to communicate in non-traditional methods, such as simple non-verbal communicative signals or through the use of electronic devices and laptop computers with voice software, allows increased choices for each resident.
In order to provide vocational training opportunities for adults with intellectual developmental disabilities, Holy Angels operates two businesses located on Main Street in downtown Belmont:
Cherubs Café and Cherubs Candy Bouquet. Cherubs Café provides a delicious opportunity for a meal or tasty treat, and features gourmet and specialty coffees, ice creams, fresh-baked desserts, and soups, salads and sandwiches featuring in-season vegetables from our own organic garden. Cherubs Candy Bouquet offers a variety of unique gifts for sweethearts, family and friends, and corporate events. These fun-to-give bouquets are made with candies, chocolates and colorful accessories. Both businesses employ residents of Holy Angels Community Group Homes and guarantee service with a smile.
To support adults with intellectual developmental disabilities age 21 or over who live in the community, Holy Angels offers a Life Choices Adult Day Activity program designed specifically to promote individual adaptive, social and emotional skills, as well as personal independence. Activities include a variety of life skills training such as money management, health and safety, academics and home economics. Additionally, participants explore and develop abilities in special areas; such as horticulture, music, art and more.
Great Adventures Club is a community outreach program designed for adults with and without intellectual developmental disabilities to learn about each other and from each other. The club offers service, recreational, social, leadership and spiritual opportunities.
Social, Cultural & Spiritual Growth
Holy Angels recognizes and celebrates the importance of fun and joy in the lives of our residents. Whether it’s developing hidden talents or experiencing the great outdoors, our residents are encouraged and empowered to grow outside of themselves and enjoy life through a wide variety of social and cultural experiences, Recreation and Creative Arts therapies.
Inspired by our history with the Sisters of Mercy, Holy Angels is committed to providing opportunities for Spiritual Growth for our residents, their families, our staff and volunteers. Serving a diverse faith community, we offer Chaplain Services, Sunday prayer services, memorial services and one-on-one spiritual guidance and grief counseling. Each day, we celebrate Mercy Moments, those special moments that capture the heart of Holy Angels and the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy. An annual highlight, our residents perform their own unique and inspiring telling of the Nativity during Christmas Mass.
