Small Fire, Big Impact
It all began Friday night when a staff member smelled smoke in the Morrow Center. In less than five minutes, our staff safely evacuated all 20 residents with complex medical needs who live there. The quick action of our staff and swift response from local fire departments allowed the fire to be contained, but not before the building was consumed by thick smoke.
While the fire was small, the impacts are big. The Morrow Center is the heart of our campus and houses the medical services that make Holy Angels the only facility in the state that can support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile. The effects of the fire are widespread:
Most of the specialized medical equipment in the Health Care Center is unusable and will need to be replaced. This clinic supports all the medical care for all 83 of our residents.
20 residents are displaced from their homes, and their clothes, toys, accessories and more will need to be replaced.
The Morrow Center also houses our classrooms for our Special Education program, sensory therapy room, music therapy room with instruments and more.
At least 50 staff are also displaced from their workspaces and are working creatively to maintain our mission.
