Growing Life Skills through Life Choices
/When Karl first came to Life Choices, he kept to himself—but with time, engaging activities and encouragement, he began to thrive. Today, he is more outgoing and curious, loves researching on the computer, and is “quite the hit with the ladies,” according to his mom. “Since joining Life Choices, Karl’s social skills have greatly improved,” she added. “He’s more vocal about his needs and desires. He’s formed real friendships and engages with them outside the program. It’s exciting to see Karl become his own person.”
Karl’s journey mirrors the growth of Life Choices itself. The program was born 17 years ago when Holy Angels answered the call for a community need—programming for young adults with disabilities after graduating high school. What started with just six participants is now a vibrant day program for 37 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Each weekday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., participants work on life skills that build independence—from cooking and communication to social interaction and problem solving. They also gain pre-vocational skills to prepare for meaningful employment. With music and horticulture therapy, art and cooking classes, visits from therapy dogs Doc and Leah, computer and literacy time and exercise – preferably Richard Simmons workout videos – Life Choices blends purpose and joy, creating a space where growth happens every day.
