Behind Every Boat Ride, a Big-Hearted Volunteer

Each summer at Holy Angels brings one of our residents’ favorite experiences—boat rides at Camp Hope. Nestled along the shores of Lake Wylie, our camp gives all 82 residents the opportunity to enjoy the sights, sounds and freedom of the water. These rides provide far more than just fun for our residents. The fresh air, spray of the water and movement of the boat create a powerful sensory experience that fosters joy, connection and excitement.

None of it would be possible, however, without our volunteer boat captains. Every boat ride is helmed by a trained volunteer, many of whom have generously given their time and heart to this effort for decades.

“We try to keep it interesting—hit the waves, create moments they can feel,” said Frank Johnson, this year’s Volunteer of the Year and a boat captain of 10 years. “Being able to help like this is different - it’s a way to give back and spend quality time with the residents. It’s so nice to see that breeze bring a smile to someone who wasn’t expressive before. It’s meaningful to give them that experience.”

John Gannon, a longtime volunteer and former board member, agrees. “What better way to show love than to give smiles?,” he said. “It always generates smiles. It’s a simple pleasure that means so much to them – and to the staff and volunteers who serve them – and to me!"

From safety checks to scenic cruises, our captains keep the experience safe and unforgettable. Thanks to their dedication, our residents don’t just go for a boat ride—they make memories through a summer activity many of us take for granted.

To our 14 incredible boat captains, thank you for steering with heart and giving our residents the gift of joy on the water. If you’re interested in volunteering as a boat driver, click here.
